"I will pour out my Spirit": the Lucan use of Joel 3,1-5 in Acts 2:17-21

The New Testament (NT) contains many citations, allusions and echoes from the Old Testament (OT), because the New Testament authors used the Jewish Holy Scriptures on a daily basis, although in its Greek version, the most frequently used language at that time. The recourse by NT authors to the OT was so common that the Old Testament texts are found everywhere in the NT books, including apocryphal religious texts and other traditions such as poetry and philosophy. In view of their theological intentions, the NT authors preserved or modified the original meaning of the OT texts as a resource or rhetorical strategy, according to their theological scope. Some authors used them a little more and others a little less, but they usually used them much more from the Greek version than from the Hebrew text. The present article, making use of the Historical Critical Method and Semitic Biblical Rhetorical Analysis, analyzes the use of Joel 3:1-5 in Acts 2:17-21, fully quoted in the NT; it is unusual to find an entire chapter from an OT book quoted in an NT book. The aim of this article is to understand the source from which Joel’s text was cited, seeing whether in its entirety or if it has undergone any changes, since the text of the Acts of the Apostles shows some textual differences. The article analyzes the OT source in both Hebrew and Greek, as well as the NT text, with structure and translation, indicating the nuances and richness of the use of Joel’s prophecy by the author of the Acts of the Apostles.
