Abstract

This article outlines an itinerary of the prophetic movement in the Old Testament. A definition of the prophetic function or imprint clarifies that God respects the human person, while also using him or her as an instrument. To speak of prophets was a blessing, but it also brought difficulties among the hearers, and even between prophets, around obedience or disobedience to the divine message presented via a particular person, generating criticism and doubts as to its veracity. The article presents some criteria that matured among the people of God in order to have a certain certainty about the truth of the divine message given by means of a prophet.
