Abstract

The circumstances of the gestation, birth and development of Qhuchapampa K'itijpa Ayllu Simin-Regional Academy of the Quechua Language, Cochabamba, a linguistic and cultural institution, is the central theme of this article. It describes and analyzes the socio-historical-political background that led to the emergence of this institution. The article also discusses the emphasis placed by the founders and current members on their activities, within the framework of the institutional goals. The results of the studies, research and essays of the members of the Academy of Quechua and its literary production in the Quechua language are presented. The line of analysis in the article is that the institutional path has been motivated by the conviction that the strengthening of a language contributes to the vitality of a culture, and the death of a language means the disappearance of this culture.

Author Biography

José Antonio Rocha Torrico, Universidad Mayor de San Simón

José Antonio Rocha Torrico has been the President of the Regional Academy of the Quechua Language in Cochabamba from 2002 to the present. He holds a Doctorate in Human Sciences with a specialization in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Ulm (Germany). He was a Tenured Professor of Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad Mayor de San Simón (1991–2025), where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (2012–2015) and Vice Rector of the university (2014–2015). Additionally, he served as a member of the Administration Board of the Cultural Foundation of the Central Bank of Bolivia (2021–2023), appointed by the Ministry of Cultures, Decolonization, and Depatriarchalization of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. Most recently, he served as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UMSS (2025).
