The Spiritual and Social Meaning of the Jubilee Year in the Bible

This Jubilee Year in the Church (2025) is a propitious occasion to get closer to the biblical roots of the Jubilee. From the legal traditions of the Old Testament on the Holy, Sabbatical and Jubilee years, in the books of Exodus, Deuteronomy and Leviticus, and looking at the prophetic text of Isaiah 61:1-2, this article covers the basic texts of Sacred Scripture, revealing the profoundly spiritual meaning and social scope of the year of grace in all of them, culminating with the programmatic text of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke (Lk 4:18-21). In this latter text the universal meaning of liberation proclaimed in all the previous texts is shown, since in Jesus the year of grace reaches its fullness, as the Good News of salvation for the poor, the indebted, the captives, the blind and the oppressed of the whole earth. In the updating of these objectives, some calls Pope Francis makes in the Bull of convocation of the Jubilee 2025 are presented, as well as two concrete, truly synodal, proposals of the V American Missionary Congress (2018) that embody and make visible the Jubilee spirit.
